I'm a fourth year seminary student attempting to balance life, youth ministry, and academics along with preparing to have a child. This is about being in the world but not of the world. I'll talk about everything from the Word of God, my wife, recent books, the Red Sox, Lost, my ministry, interesting insights into our culture, and anything else that runs across my plate.

What did I say 2 weeks ago? Tables will turn and there will be a NEW bottom guy. Yes, indeedy. (At least Kate may stop hanging out around him now.)
It's interesting that Sawyer and Charlie are not completely bad, not the sorts you want to boo and hiss. (besides, Sawyer gets some of the best lines!) But they are immature, self-centered egotists. It's not that they are incapable of doing outwardly beneficial things for others at times, but at the core they are the topdog, #1 guy. It makes me think of what we must look like to God. From a human POV we can do good, but from God's POV the human heart is strongly attached to self and pride, all our "good works" apart from God are as filthy rags. Sort of what Sawyer and Charlie seem like to us.
...and did you notice that Kate's Mom was a waitress in the restaurant where Sawyer met his partner? And how about the Glen Miller Band playing "Moonlight Serenade" on the radio? (At first I thought I was in an X-Files backflash. ;) Miller's plane vanished during WWII. Do I hear "Bermuda Triangle" time warp?
KATES MOM!! I didn't notice that until you just said that! hmm...
Charlie> wow! not who I thought! and no heroine either! good for him!
Sawyer> I still don't like him that much, he is too quick to do thing and doesn't think, neither does Jack. at lease Jack would listen to Locke. and other people.
What would Sawyer have done in the woods then Kate had been brought out? Let her get shot?
GUNS?? why use them, they are son out numbered and they know it! what is the use?
MORE TO FOLLOW!
ok, so I finally watched the last two episodes and I loved it! I was telling Leah that we haven't had anyone to loathe. that everyone was getting sort of friendly and nice. last season we didn't like sawyer or jin and for a little while weren't sure about Locke, but then they all got 'friendly' and everyone was nice. Now we got some 'Lord of the Flies' action going on and people's real personalities are coming out.
I am disappointed about Charlie, but I like the tension he has in him.
and next week's episode looks great! Hopefully this whole episode with Sawyer will get Locke and Jack back on the same page. They both have gotten a little full of themselves.
and I still want to see Jin kick butt.
When Sun got dragged off my first reaction was Hot Lips did it. I still didn't think Charlie did it until the end, but thought that Sawyer just capitalized on the situation. But Sawyer is a con man.
and did you guys see the look that Hot Lips and Kate shared? conflict there!
I'm glad this is the direction the show is taking. everything was turning into too much of a love story and 'la di da di da' everything will be fine. I like the dark turn its taken
Doug, I do have the most recent episodes on VHS (when Beth is done). She wasn't feeling well recently, so maybe she watched the DVDs. (Isn't that awful that we're looking forward to "sick days" so Beth will finish watching the DVDs? Bad...bad...)
Sawyer would not have sacrificed Kate. Remember he lunged forward when he saw they had her? As I said, he's not as bad as he could possibly be, but he is centered around himself. Once Jack "dissed" him by taking his stash of painkillers, he was out for revenge. He probably wouldn't have done it if Jack hadn't been quite so bossy. (but, yes, he is responsible for his actions...no blameshifting allowed)
And, Jen - Hurray for Charlie? Yeah, I'm glad he isn't using, but he acted dispicably! At least when he was trying to baptize the baby it was because of his dreams. In this week's episode he acted from plain old spite - no redeeming excuse.
I was thinking about how people act differently in a crisis than they normally do. Some people act better and some worse. Now that they've been there a while, their real personalities are coming out. Interesting.
(And maybe the name of the song is "Moonlight Sonata". I know it's an "S"- Sonata, Serenade...) And wasn't it funny how they keep doing the Steve/Scott thing (or whatever the names are)? I let out a hoot when I heard the line. ;)
Colin suspected from the start that someone from their own group attacked Sun. (See, you've even got him addicted now!) He said the dog didn't bark, so must have known who was out there. He would have barked at a complete stranger. I thought that was a good observation.
Sawyer almost implicated himself when he told freckles that the hood wasn't from 'the others' because it wasn't the same. The thing is that only locke, jack, sawyer, and kate knew what the hood looked like, and none of them really did it, so right there you knew it was probably a multiple person job. One of those four would have had to be working with someone, and the only one who would is Sawyer.
Now that people are feeling more comfortable, they're acting like they normally would, instead of as a team when facing danger. Something will happen when Sawyer will need the others and will have to accept help.
Don't you think Sawyer pointed out the hood differences to Kate so she would suspect Hotlips? He's good at sensing undertones and jealousies and taking advantage of them. (Of course, you would have to be BLIND to miss the animosity between Hotlips and Kate. ;)
Oh, I should mention that Glenn Miller's plane disappeared in the Atlantic on his way to Europe during WWII. He wasn't in the So. Pacific, but I still think they were referencing his plane's disappearance.
Wow, I had no idea there was such discussion going on about this show
I think Sawyer had been planning the whole thing for a long time. Wasn't that the point of the long-con story? Also, Deb, I think Sawyer would have sacrificed Kate...if he didn't need her. When he lunged for her during the Others episode, was it concern for her or his plan? He needed Kate so he could use the tension between her and Anna Lucia.
The whole Glenn Miller thing blew me away. Anyone familiar with the Philadelphia Experiment? It was a WWII initiative that, at very least, experimented with invisibility or cloaking. Now, some say it was also a venture into time travel, but this has been "officially denied" by the gov't. Basically, what has been reported to have happened, but denied by the gov't, is this: The Navy had a battle ship, equiped with the Philadelphia Exp. device(s), docked in Philladelphia. When they turned the equip on, the ship vanished and was reported to have been seen appearing at dock in Virginia some where, where it again vanished, and reappeared in Philly. When it was boarded for inspection, crew members where reportedly found to have been fused in to parts of ths ship as if they entered into space and time that was already occupied. Other crew memebers were reported to experience moments of "freezing", standing still, not moving, for no apparent reason until they either snapped out of it or burst into flames. OK, so what does this have to do with anything? Well, the first run of the experiment, carried out with an unmanned ship, was carried out in early 1942, and was completely succesful (whatever it was that it was meant to succeed in). Now after that run, the guy who was in charge, Nikola Tesla (who was one of those totally insane, wacked out geniuses, known for his work with electricity and dabblings with space/time theories. His motives were very much like those expressed in "the film" and on the Hanso Foundation web-site)), saw potential problems/dangers with the whole concept and tried to get the gov't to rethink everything. They declined, so he sabotaged the first attempt with a manned vessel, taking place in mid 1942 (same year Miller's plane disappeared), and then quit the project. OK, when Hurley and Sayid were on the beach and picked up the Glenn Miller song, Sayid said something about short wave radio signals bouncing off the ionosphere and travelling great distances "no matter where we are." Hurley replies, "Or when we are....Just kidding, dude." Also, and this may be internet hokum, although a source was cited and it fits the time line, something significant happened in the course of the Philly Exp. on the following date and time: Aug 8, 3:16 and 23 seconds pm, 1942. In military notation, this is represented as 4/8,15:16:23,42.
Oh, Ian, how incredibly X-filish!! Where did you get all this? The name "Philadelphia Experiment" rings a bell, but I couldn't tell you what it was about. And I am familiar with Tesla. But the whole number thing is incredible! Do you suppose that is where they originally got the numbers from? I figure they must have researched every "odd" thing they could find to use as possible fodder for the show. Does anyone know exactly when Glenn Miller's plane disappeared?
Concerning Sawyer...that WOULD be a long-con! You REALLY do believe in Total Depravity! ;)
Nikki-
Hi! Feel free to join in...we all love a good puzzle...
Nikki!! here too? did you watch it this week?
AND I think that everyone needs to read the comment that Happy left onmy blog last night, or go to Amys blog! more good stuff!
Colin and I were talking about the Philadelphia Experiment and seem to remember it being related to nuclear weapons. I DO remember an X-Files episode where Mulder was on a ship with an experimental cloaking device and men were welded into parts of the ship; they may have based it on this theory. But I think this may be one of those "consipiracy theories". Where did you find it Ian? It could be a lot of speculation. The numbers, of course, remain quite interesting. Colin said he thinks military dates list the day before the month, but wouldn't that be 8/8? Do you know why it would be 4/8? Do they start the year on a different month? C'mon Ian and Robb, you're our military representatives.
The Philadelphia experiment is pretty easy to find out about. I've known about it since I was, like, 10 (of course, we Graves have not been known for a set of normal interests). You can google it and come up with a bunch of stuff. There's a book called "The Philadelphia Experiment: Project Invisibility" which is written by a guy who was supposedly part of the project. Some would say it was a "conspiracy theory" book as it claims to be a tell-all of what the gov't doesn't want you to know. The book mentions the man/ship fusion incident.
You're right about the military date thing; April 8, 1942 would be notated as 08Apr42 (day, month, year), not 4/8/42. I was hasty in my post; I meant to say something like "notated with military time...". The experts, such as Tesla, involved in the project were not military, so the possibility of a connection is valid.
I see the date problem - you accidentally wrote "August" the first time, but you meant "April". That would turn out right. Since you were 10, huh? Scary. ;) I guess we were confusing it with similar research going on at the same time (re: nuclear bomb). Did they make a movie about this? (And I'm not confusing it with The Philadelphia STORY.) I know I've heard about it. Guess I'll go google...or should I say, go Blingo. [They really DID do an X-Fliles episode on this...I have it. Maybe I should go watch that again. Mulder will patiently explain it to me. ;)]
OK, check out these sites:

One is the official Navy version, the other concerns a never aired program about it made for A&E. It does sound rather "conspiracy-ish"; the people are also connected with UFO stuff. And they mention the book Ian is so familiar with. I didn't see anything about THE dates, but Ian knows about that. Apparently this is what the writers of LOST are referring to. And it looks like this is where they may have gotten their numbers. Good thing Ian read this when he was a kid! I doubt we would have found out otherwise, except for Mulder, of course. [I bet you wrote interesting papers in HS, Ian!]
Oh, and Glen Miller's plane disappeared on December 15, 1944 on its way to Paris. It was never found.
There was a cheesy 80's movie called "The Philadelphia Experiment". It was OK, but I'm not sure if it was based on anything other than the basic idea of the actual WWII project. Also, if I remember correctly, the movie was set in the current day and not the 40's.
Hmm interesting stuff with the philadelphia experiment Ian.
I didn't like last weeks show at all. I didn't like how they didnt' get along and there was so much fighting, which is so not like me- hormones? I think the episodes should be about them planting gardens and playing games together. Jack finds some nail polish and paints Kate's toes- yes, that would be perfect.
Those dates for the Philadelphia Experiment don't match up with what Ian saw on that website. The ship wasn't even commissioned until 1943! I think those numbers were time warped...but it would have been nice if that's where the numbers came from.
This is from the US Navy site:
"The ship involved in the experiment was supposedly the USS Eldridge. Operational Archives has reviewed the deck log and war diary from Eldridge's commissioning on 27 August 1943 at the New York Navy Yard through December 1943."
