Besides finding Sayid and Sawyer rather stomach turning this episode, I did notice Kate's Dad as the officer who initially had Sayid during Desert Storm. In case you didn't catch it, they showed him holding her picture at the end. It was funny- when I first saw him I kept thinking, "He looks familiar. What else has he been in?" [...it's an old habit I'm sure my kids would verify] It made me laugh when it finally came to me WHY he looked familiar.
Are you imagining a Sawyer/Sayid/Charlie "special forces" team? IS the stranger one of the "Others"? Does Sayid beat people up first to decide whether or not he likes them? (Could be a problem for new acquaintences)

yeah, I think the whole frog thing revealed Sawyer's true heart...no more tough guy persona but sweet on the inside
Was that really Kate's dad? I knew he looked familiar but I don't remember him that well. I thought he was more clean cut recruiter type, not on the field officer.
Someone said to me yesterday, when are they going to pick the pace up? It does really seem to be slowing down...Backgrounds are a good thing to know but pick it up a little. :)
ALSO a little side note, reading on my aol news..."Kate" is pregnant in real life with "Charlie's" baby. Did anyone else know that they were an item? SO...how will this affect the show? Are they going to do away with Kate? or not show her full view? Just something to watch for in the next few months!
OK...the frog thing was GROSS!! Phil thought that it was the "others" trying to signal each other? any thought on that? We have never heard so much jungle noises as we did this week. Did anyone else notice that? AND
Was Sayid a torturer for the US? Or did they dump him and he was back on the Iraqi side? Yes, they dumped him off in the middle of the desert, but who would go back after you had to torture your commanding officer? Ideas anyone? and where is Tbone? :)
ONE more thing. Sayid left the pliers in the room with the guy, and Jack went in there...then it was ended! anyone else catch that? I do really think he is an "other". Did you look in his eyes when Jack was trying to get Sayid to stop? almost a victorious look! Like he knows he fooled Jack.
Did anyone else see it?
Kate's Dad was the officer who FIRST asked Sayid if he could translate and then at the end was riding in the back of the truck holding the picture, just before they dumped him off. I wasn't talking about the CIA guy (no uniform) who had him torture his commanding officer and then at the end showed that he had known how to speak Arabic all along - so translation wasn't the real reason they had wanted Sayid. They wanted to get the info about the pilot, but were not allowed to use torture...so they enlisted an Iraqui to do it for them. Technicalities...technicalities... Do you think Sayid's commanding officer was REALLY guilty of releasing the Sarin in that village? I know they told him they had seen his commander's file, but I've heard the CIA has been known for not completely telling the truth in order to get what they want. ;)
Yeah, I think that guy is lying. He's an "other". I'm as bad as Jack in wanting to believe people, but that guy would have known details about burying his wife and that "look" of hatred was really "soul revealing". Too bad Jack didn't look. It occurred to me that maybe Sayid is enlisting Charlie's help because he plans to kill the guy before he can hurt them.
Yeah, Nikki, I agree with you. Sawyer's real nature came through quite clearly with the squishing of that frog. He is "charming" when he wants to use people, and as Ian had pointed out, we shouldn't be lured into complacency because he is a master of the "long con". He's a manipulator, pure and simple.
Concerning Sayid's job after Desert Storm...when did he save that woman? before or after Desert Storm? Then he was shown in Australia and the Americans sought him out to infiltrate that terrorist cell. I have forgotten WHY he was in Australia to begin with. Did they ever say?
he was in Australia to help with a suicide bomb attempt. (or to talk the guy out of it, I don't remember which! But that is why he was there.
Ever notice that Hurley owns a box company and Locke works for a box company? has anyone every caught that one? hmmm....
That's it!
Ok, Ian may know about the Philadelphia Experiment...but I know Egyptian hieroglyphs! (Do you ever stop and think what a bunch of nerds we are? ;)] Those were hieroglyphs that showed up briefly before the clock reset. Today I looked a little more closely at the video. On the left were three black background symbols: folded napkin ...blurred, can't see it...butcher's knife, that would be s_nm. On the right were two red background symbols: falcon and a sign derived from Hieratic (sort of cursive hieroglyphs), that would be hr (the god Horus) ___ (I don't know what the Hieratic symbol means). So what have we got...
s_nm hr(Horus)?
I'll look through some of my books for the hieratic symbol sound. These aren't Egyptian words, because they would be in clumps of symbols to form a word. It seems they are using these as individual letter sounds. Are they English words in Egyptian letters? I'll do a little more looking...and YOU thought I knew only Greek. ;)
Thanks for checking into the symbols, that was yet another great attempt to leave us hanging and wanting to watch more! I do wonder if the colors red and black were significant too, being that they are the colors of death....ah! when will the mystery end?
I looked at the symbols one more time. What I thought was a falcon is really the Egyptian vulture (an "aleph", pronounce as the "a" in hat). And the hieratic sign on the far right is the number 6. I also saw a "seated man" flip through the 2nd slot from the right (where it stopped on the Egyptian vulture) - stands for "man". It also turns out the "folded napkin" can either be the sound "s" or the word "she". In the blurred one 2nd slot from the Left I saw another "folded napkin", but it didn't settle (that it showed anyway). So from left to right we have:
"s"/she ____ nm (black)+ a6 (red). If you read right to left (Egyptian columns read right to left like Hebrew, top to bottom), you have:
6anm___s. Hieroglyphs don't use vowels (except "aleph")...could this be
"6 animals"? :) Oh, the possiblities!
It also occurred to me there were elements of gambling: the red/black of roulette and slot machines. If the final hieroglyph had stopped, would the fire doors have come down? Maybe they are random hieroglyphs that give a combination to reopen the firedoors or something.
I know I'm getting carried away (looove a puzzle), but how many kinds of animals have we seen on the island so far? Polar bear, black horse, wild boar, anything else? Should tree frog be counted? Any other animals?
[They brought the dog with them, so I don't think he counts...or does he?]
LOJO!!! heehee...what have we started???
Jen, you've got the 1st Season DVDs (remember Doug W. gets them next Mon!) - I think the entry into the hatch was at the end of Season 1. Take a look (...in your spare time...do your Bible study first ;)
And listen guys...aren't you a BIT amazed I knew some hieroglyphs? I expected a few.."Oh, c'mon..get out of here!"s. Or should I be happy that you yawned & thought, "Oh well...of COURSE she knows something esoteric and completely useless like Egyptian hieroglyphics!"? ;) It will be interesting to see if they were supposed to mean anything or were just a random red herring.
And "Welcome" to our obsession Lojo! ;)
Deb,
Oddly enough, it doesn't suprise me in the least that you know hieroglyphs ;)
I read somewhere that the hieroglyphs meant "cause to die". Any possibility there? I like the 6 animals approach, though, as there are 6 stations (according to the film), and the one we know of (the hatch) has an animal name (Swan Station). I think it's a safe bet that the other 5 have animal names as well, so "6 animals" could be referring to the stations of the Dharma project.
The guy Sayid "spoke with" is definitely a liar. For those of you that have the episode on tape, go back and watch the part when he was explaining to Sayid why he and his wife stayed on the beach. He said they had an emergency transmitter. Notice Sayid's reaction when, after questioning as to what kind of transmitter, the guy tells him it was an ADF Beacon. Remember, Sayid's not just a torturer, but also a communications guy. Here's the thing: An ADF is neither 1) a transmitter, nor 2)a beacon. It is used in aviation, but all it does is lock onto radio signals and point the way to their source. Sayid would know this. So would someone who was supposedly trying to fly across the Pacific in a hot air balloon.
Now, I've got another thing that I can't be sure of, but it would be great if it were true. The captive started telling his ballon story once in the hatch. If you go back and look, there is a picture on the wall across from the weight bench they had him propped up on. This is what I can't be sure of, but this picture looks to be off a hot air balloon flying over a field. Hmmmm....
Ian...thanks now I have to watch it again!! before I watch all the old episodes!
We were going to have a marathon last night but, we decided against it! TONIGHT...then I will be able to give more comments!
That's all for now! bye...
I looked at the tape again. When the "other" was in the main room, after Jack removed the arrow and before the put him in the "questioning room", there's a distance shot (right after returning from a commercial) that shows a framed picture directly across from the weight bench where he had been propped. It could very well show a balloon over a field and a barn. (My TV & VCR just doesn't show things as clearly as newer ones do.)But it is definitely a large something in the air over a field and a barn/building. Good one, Ian. How those people came up with that interpretation of the hieroglyphs is beyond me! I could play with combining them into an Egyptian word, but it would be tough to know the order. Groupings for Egyptian words are in clumps and you read them by starting on the West position, then rotate clockwise (North-East-South). Someone either knows hieroglyphs REALLY well and put the individual symbols into word combinations or they have no idea what they're talking about. I like your idea of the 6 stations with animal names! Maybe next week we'll find out the name of the station they will find. I also think it's interesting to check out Lojo's memory of their originally being 6 men in each pod. Maybe the number 6 will be significant...maybe we'll find a THIRD use of the number and end up with 6-6-6!
well, i finally watched the episode after getting back from San Diego this weekend, and it was great. I'm happy that there is again tension in the air.
Locke is getting so full of himself. 'we're all others, really' gosh, what an idiot.
i hate how NO ONE talks to each other. if they just communicated and actually told people what they see and what they do or hear then things would be a lot better.
I liked how hurley isn't going to let Sawyer manipulate him and use this info against him. He'd be just as willing to go and confess it to everyone instead of letting Sawyer have some power over him.
I think the guy is an 'other' as well. that look he gave sawyer as Jack was closing the door was just evil. but then again, is that what the writers want us to think?
great catch on the balloon pic Ian. about the transmitter, the thing is I don't know if the writers would make that mistake or if they purposely said that.
it was odd how Sayid went and talked to Charlie. I can see two groups forming here. Jack, Hot Lips, maybe Kate, Hurley, against Sawyer, Charlie, and Sayid with Locke having to find what side he's on.
Locke has stopped searching for the truth since they discovered the hatch. he's stopped trying to learn and see what 'the island' is trying to tell him and is just content to push the button. sad.
no echo or hot lips this past week.
I wish Jack just decked Locke . Just punch him in the grill.
the episode this next week looks like one of the first episodes from last year. why are they doing that? its about scavaging the plane and coming together. why show such an old episode.
I had heard about charlie and kate being together in real life, but I didnt hear about the pregnancy. is this it for kate or will she mysteriously get kidnapped. she will be able to use the break this summer to have the baby, but it seems like she can't hide it for that long or get off the weight afterwards that quick. I'm betting on her getting kidnapped.
Hey, they managed an entire season with Gillian Anderson pregnant! Remember the season of close-ups of Scully's fat face and her wearing "the raincoat" so much? Pretty funny...but they managed it. They COULD work the pregnancy into the story. I don't think they would get rid of her...the triangle thing is just too alluring for the story line. Somehow I just can't warm up to the idea of Hotlips being friendly with anyone. She has too many "sharp edges". We need Kate.
I'm so glad we have this forum- Lost for Dummies.
What if the guy is both a hot air ballooner and an other. The other's had to get there somehow- and I don't get the feeling they were part of the original project. What if he was using the radio receiver thing to lock onto the transmission coming from the island- like the crazy French lady was. Maybe he knew something and sought after it instead of accidentally coming accross the signal- although why travel in a hot air balloon?
Tim- I think if we are going to have two sides hot lips and kate would definately not be on the same side- my bet is that Kate ends up on Sawyer's team.
I agree Locke's "we're all other's" comment was "deep man" so "deep". He is definately less cool this season.
Hey mom- I just read this post and then went to Edwards part 4. So John Locke was a theologian hmm... is there significance to John Locke on Lost? Self responsibility?
Locke wasn't a theologian, per se, but a philosopher. Although, they do boil down to the same thing, really.
Tim- "Sayid went and talked"
In Greek this year I learned that this is a Hebrew construction the NT writers (especially John, I think) used often. I'm assuming you used it because of the influence of all those Hebrew classes...not because you would use poor English...;). Seriously, I wonder if that is how it developed into American language. Do other languages use that construction? Have we just picked it up? I've never heard a Brit use that construction, but you do hear it in American English. Interesting...(don't worry, I don't plan on researching and writing a post on it ;) [Now you see how I'm so easily lured down obscure rabbit trails...ooh..tie-in with Ian. ;)]
