LOST: "The Pilot" Redux

I know it was disappointing to have another rerun, but let's face it...it's Winter Olympics and February sweeps are just about over. I have to admit I enjoyed rewatching the Pilot. It reminded me of how good it was! I remember having stumbled upon the Pilot during a commercial break of History Channel (yes, I have adopted Tim's annoying habit of flipping through channels during commercial breaks...pitiful...)and being mesmerized. I hadn't seen anything that good on TV in a loooong time.

I concentrated on little details last night and refreshed myself on what the characters were like when the show started out. I enjoyed watching Kate and Jack bond. I still think Shannon was a complete idiot, regardless of her "circumstances". Hurley was always a good guy. Charlie's band should have had a 2nd hit. Locke was wierder than I remembered (the "orange" smile???). And I picked up for the first time that Jack was drinking a litttle too heavily on the plane...like his Dad. If it hadn't been for the wreck would he be heading down his Dad's trail in life? Had work and his personal life gotten to be too much of a load for him?

What did you notice that you didn't catch the first time around?

I think that Locke...as weird as he was in that episode was rejoicing. Remember he was in a wheelchair before the accident. No they didn't show that last night but I think he was happy that the plane crashed. The orange smile yeah...creepy!

Phil mentioned Vincent...I wonder if he has some control over things? He is always around too when something is about to happen. Remember he was in the woods for days after the crash. Did he get "taken over" by the smoke? Almost like he is leading the others to people.

Sawyers true colors showed last night. We saw him as cruel and not forgiving of anything. he seemed to mask it pretty well until the frog thing last week.

The Korean couple: hmm...noticed he was a little compulsive! I forgot he was that way! did anyone else?

WHAT WAS THE TATTOO ON JACKS ARM???
That looked like something important. I don't think they have shown it since that first episode, have they?

Anything else??? anyone, anyone???

Beth & Tim told me the tatoo is a real one on the actor; it doesn't have anything to do with the show. You can see it "peeking out" from his sleeve in other episodes. You've never noticed?

I didn't like Jin for a long time...but the island changed him back to what he had been like before he started working for her father. I had forgotten how selfish he was in the pilot - not wanting her to help anyone, keeping people from sharing their shelter during the storm, etc.

Speaking of the storm...those storms seem more unnatural to me as time goes on. The tropics do have sudden short showers, but these are torrential downpours, black sky, etc.

I did get the Ladie's skiing taped for you, Beth. I just watched LOST until Ladie's slalom started. It was pretty bad at first because the fog was TERRIBLE. The last skiers (the top ones) also had an advantage because the fog lifted by the time their runs came up.

I also got some of the Ladies' Aerials before LOST started. But it didn't hold my interest. I can't get into a sport that consistently causes bad knee damage for its participants. Just wait until the first generation of aerialists hits their 60's! The highest jump was just insane - I can't enjoy watching people purposely destroying their bodies. Other sports can result in injury, but in aerials EVERYONE is eventually injured.

I was reading on Lost forum that the name of the other who is claiming to be a hot air ballooner is George Gale (I think- it was a few hours ago). Anyways, it's the same name as the wizard in the Wizard of Oz- that is how the wizard got to Oz- on a hot air balloon. The lost writers are so creative!

A few things that I was reminded of:

First, the monstrosity of, well, the monster. I had forgotten the noise, the shadow it cast on the cockpit before taking the pilot, etc. I quickly realized that the smoke and the monster are two different things. Also, the monster knocked trees down, the smoke pulls (or pushes) them up in the air.

Second, I was amazed how consistant the writers/producers have been in the character's physical attributes: growing hair, shrinking bodies, healing wounds, etc. Fantastic.

I, too, had forgotten how much of a jerk Sawyer has always been.

Jin was just trying to protect his wife the only way he knew how.

It was fun to see faces on the plane that showed up much later in the story. The stewardess that was checking on Charlie, for instance, was the tailee that got taken by the Others when Sawyer, Jin, and Michael were taking them back to the beach.

Jack's tattoo: While it is real, it almost certainly has been worked into the storyline. If you go back and watch the episodes that deal with Jack's wedding, there are seens of him putting a shirt on and the tattoo isn't there (covered up with make-up). The writers are too smart to let an inconsistancy like that go; it was definitely on purpose.

And the storms! What did I say a few weeks ago? Every time it rains, something bad happens. I really don't think it's just coincidental.

Now I can't wait to find out what the porducers wanted to remind us of before the next new episode!

I can't wait to see what the porducers do either! heehee...

Got to agree with the storms...yeah, definitly when something bad happens.

Ian I am glad that you mentioned the flight attendent. I didn't ealize it was her...good job!

I think that Jacks tatoo is somehow being "written" into the show. Yes, it is real, but what is it going to stand for?

ok...that is all!!

It hadn't occurred to me that they air the rerun that will give us background info on a new episode. That puts a new spin on things. Maybe I won't complain so much about all the reruns. ;)

I didn't recognize the flight attendant either. I remember thinking at one point that it was odd that none of the planes' crew had survived.

So you think the smoke and the monster are two different things? Hmmm... Have we "seen" the monster since the first few episodes? [It was pretty scary on that beach! It reminded me of a dinosaur,Jurassic Parkish, yet it was invisible.] I was assuming the smoke could take different forms, act differently in different circumstances, with different people. I thought it didn't WANT that pilot to live or for them to get the radio from the cockpit. Rousseau said it was "a security system", so it would have shown up at the beach in The Pilot because there were new "invaders" on the island.

Beth, that's great about the Wizard of Oz tie in! In the books (not the movie) there were lots of different stories. It was a whole series of books. Has anyone ever read any of them? I have one in the SS Library; I should read it...in my spare time...;)

Oh...and Beth, I appreciated the LOST tie-in on your blog (concerning the color of the wood of the vanity top). Very funny...worth a hoot or two... :)
